Sanchez helps Pirates sneak past Marlins

04/21/2009 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and Jeff Karstens pitched a solid six innings, as the Pittsburgh Pirates held on to edge the Florida Marlins, 3-2, in the second of a three-game series at PNC Park.

Adam LaRoche and Jason Jaramillo also knocked in a run apiece for the Pirates, who routed the Marlins 8-0 in the series opener on Monday. Pittsburgh has won four of five overall.

Karstens (1-0) earned the win after giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. He was facing the Marlins for the first time in his career. Matt Capps tossed a scoreless ninth to collect his fourth save of the year.

The Bucs placed catcher Ryan Doumit on the 15-day disabled list earlier on Tuesday with a fractured scaphoid bone in his right wrist. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on Thursday an is expected to miss eight to 10 weeks. The club recalled catcher Robinson Diaz from Triple-A Syracuse.

Hanley Ramirez had a RBI double and Cameron Maybin hammered a solo home run to account for the Marlins runs. Florida has dropped two straight after winning the previous seven games.

Anibal Sanchez (1-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two in seven frames. He was making his first-ever appearance against the Pirates.

Florida first baseman Jorge Cantu missed the game with a sore hand and was replaced by Ross Gload, who finished 1-for-4.

With the Pirates ahead 3-1 after seven innings, Maybin's lead-off solo homer to left off reliever Tyler Yates narrowed the Marlins deficit to one.

John Grabow then came in out of the bullpen for Yates and retired Alfredo Amezaga before giving up a single to Emilio Bonifacio. After a short mound visit, the Pirates' left-hander walked pinch-hitter Ronny Paulino before setting down Ramirez and Gload to get out of trouble.

Pittsburgh was unable to tack on any insurance in the bottom of the eighth and Capps came on for the ninth and gave up a one-out single to Jeremy Hermida, but got Cody Ross to ground into a game-ending 5-4-3 double-play.

After Florida threatened in the top of the first and were unable to score, the Pirates plated a run in the home half. Adam LaRoche laced a single up the middle to bring in Nyjer Morgan, who led off the inning with a base hit.

Andy LaRoche started the second frame with a two-base hit down the left-field line and crossed the plate two batters later when Jason Jaramillo doubled high off the right-field wall to put the Pirates up by a 2-0 margin.

The Marlins got on the board in the top of the third when John Baker drew a two-out walk and Ramirez followed with a run-scoring double to center. However, Sanchez led off the home half with a solo homer and the Bucs regained the two-run lead.

Game Notes

The Pirates lost three of five to the Marlins last year and the clubs split a two-game set in the Steel City...Pittsburgh finished 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while Florida was 0-for-4.

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch
